US Department of Energy contract extension for Atkins at Hanford

Cementing its position as one of the leading nuclear services companies in the world, Atkins continues to embrace its commitment to the nuclear industry in the Tri-Cities area with an extension to its contract at the Hanford site. As a hub for its Energy Americas business, Richland is home to the Atkins Engineering Laboratory and is a centre of excellence for Atkins’ worldwide nuclear division.

Mark Morant, president of Atkins’ Energy Americas business, said: “The two-year extension to the Washington River Protection Solutions (WRPS) contract is very exciting for our team. We value our partnership with AECOM and AREVA and look forward to delivering this challenging project to the DOE and the State of Washington.”

Working on some of the most challenging nuclear legacy facilities in the U.S., Atkins is involved in delivering a number of projects at U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) sites around the country with its joint venture partners.

– The DOE has extended the Washington River Protection Solutions (WRPS) contract at the 586-square-mile Hanford Site for an additional two years. WRPS is owned by AECOM and Atkins, with AREVA as the primary subcontractor, and the project involves managing Hanford’s high-level waste and positioning it for treatment in the Waste Treatment Plant.

– Atkins was recently selected by the DOE, along with joint venture partners Westinghouse and Fluor, to operate the depleted uranium hexafluoride (DUF6) conversion facilities at DOE’s Paducah Gaseous Diffusion Plant in Paducah, Kentucky, and the Portsmouth Gaseous Diffusion Plant in Piketon, Ohio. The contract to the Mid-America Conversion Services, LLC (MCS) joint venture is valued at $318 million over a five-year period of performance beginning this year.

– September’s Open House event in Richland highlighted Atkins’ local and global offerings to the nuclear industry, introducing the company to a variety of local and national stakeholders.
