Bruce Power highlights Ontario’s commitment to future in nuclear energy
Ontario’s Parliamentary Assistant to the Minister of Energy, MPP Bob Delaney, visited the Bruce Power site to visit with employees, community dignitaries and key suppliers.
Parliamentary Assistant Delaney, who is also MPP for Mississauga-Streetsville, discussed the role Bruce Power plays in Ontario as a safe, clean, reliable and affordable energy producer, as well as marking a number of key achievements and milestones.
“For more than 30 years, clean and reliable electricity from the eight CANDU reactors at Bruce Power has been a big part of how Ontario meets its baseload requirement,” the PA Delaney said. “The planned life extension at Bruce will help ensure Ontario meets its essential electricity needs every hour of every day, regardless of weather. The Bruce Life-Extension Program itself is a province-wide economic driver, furnishing some 22,000 jobs each year during the project, and generating $4 billion in annual economic benefits in communities throughout the province.”
PA Delaney presented the employees of Bruce Power with a certificate of recognition for a record operational run on Unit 3 of 368 days before it began its planned life-extension outage on Aug.1.
MPP Delaney also recognized the achievements of the company commencing the production of medical-grade Cobalt at Bruce B, which resulted in Bruce Power becoming the first Canadian company to receive a Top Innovative Practice Award from the Nuclear Energy Institute. He also joined Bruce Power’s President and CEO, Mike Rencheck, and Bill Cooper, President and CEO of Areva Canada, for the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between the two organizations to further isotope development.
“The people of Ontario can count on Bruce Power to be a low-cost generator of electricity for many decades to come, while also driving economic growth, making important contributions to global health care and also keeping the air we breathe clean,” Rencheck said. “Our Life-Extension Program started in January 2016 and is on time and on budget. We will continue to deliver on our commitments and I want to thank the province for the policy stability it has provided our site through our long-term agreement.”
The Life-Extension Program will ensure Bruce Power nuclear continues to provide safe, clean, reliable and low-cost electricity for families and businesses through 2064. Bruce Power supplies 30 per cent of Ontario’s electricity at 30 per cent less than the average cost to generate residential power.
The operation of the Bruce site through 2064 will create and sustain 22,000 direct and indirect jobs annually, while creating $4 billion in annual Ontario economic benefit through the direct and indirect spending on operational equipment, supplies, materials and labour income.
